Predator versus Prey

I'm not sure what my obsession with bird-headed women is about...but it's been going on for some time. The above is in a group show at Eggman & Walrus gallery in Santa Fe this month....I had meant to don my life-size sparrow-headdress and romp around on opening nite, but deadlines are keeping me up late at night as it is, so some things have gotta go from the to-do list, no matter how fun.

"Octo-Kettle" image from current book project

Having a grand time mixing digital coloring and hand-drawn line/shading....the image is from a scene in the book, inside an ice-cream factory, of a tentacled copper kettle machine.  As I was intimidated about painting this, I just rendered it in graphite, added a watercolor wash to the arms, and scanned it in.  Digitally, I layered multiple transparent golden tones to the kettle body, until I got the look just right.

ART CAR - driving should be more interesting

An update on the car stencilling...was about to throw these hulk foam fists out, when moving last....and I noticed the color green matched the spray paint I'd added a year ago, so with the help of some super-glue, the Hulk-Mobile was born! I must say, I thoroughly recommend having fun with your car's appearance. I wish I'd done this long ago...some stressful life events at the time of this, made the act a symbolic one for me, so I'd have a visual of 'strength' and remember to keep breathing and carrying on. Yet, after I'd passed thru the events, the fists remained, and now a side bonus is that wherever I drive, I have people honking, waving, smiling...even screaming affirmations of love for my car. Which is a real mood-lifter, I tell you. I plan on holding a 'Car Transformation Workshop' later this spring (when the wind ceases howling) so, if you are a New Mexico resident & are interested, shoot me an email to get on the info-list for that. Commuting might possibly become an enjoyable task, with more of these on the road!

Homemade postcards

Yes, I still take time to make home-made postcards...the fact that you can place a tiny sticker on it and have it appear at your dear friend's door, is still a magical thing to me. Although pony-express would be a little more romantic. Actually, I am a fan of the whole carrier pigeon thing...thought that would mean the art would need to be somewhat microscopic. Anyhow, not that my schedule allows for this really, but I dragged these around in my work bag for over a month before I found the perfect 10 minutes...waiting in the dentist's office.

Artist-in-Residence Talk @ Herekeke

I'll be giving a 'variety show' of current projects underway, here in my studio at Herekeke (a printmaking studio & art center here in the luxurious mountainscape of Lama, northern New Mexico). I've been here for a month already, and am wishing it could somehow last forever. Easy to get attached to the views, the peace and quiet...both are rather helpful, as I've been at my desk working for at least 10 hours a day, if not more, to keep the plates spinning! If you are in the area, send me an email and I'll get you the details. Potluck @ 6, talk & slideshow at 7:30.
